Solid carbide drill

Solid carbide drills are high-precision tools designed for drilling holes with tight dimensional tolerances, consistent quality and stable cutting conditions. Thanks to their high hardness, wear resistance and thermal stability, they are particularly well-suited for challenging materials and automated CNC processes. The defined cutting edge geometry and the stable carbide structure enable controlled penetration, smooth hole formation and reliable surface quality, even at higher cutting speeds or during longer drilling cycles.

Applications

Solid carbide drills are used for through holes, blind holes, fit holes and threading dies and are employed in CNC machining centers, turning-milling centers and multi-spindle machines. They are suitable for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and numerous alloys, delivering consistent results provided that the geometry and cutting parameters are properly matched. Thanks to their high dimensional stability, they are also frequently used as a preparatory tool for subsequent machining steps such as reaming, countersinking, or thread cutting.

Technical Specifications

The performance of a solid carbide drill is influenced by the cutting edge geometry, the point angle, the design of the rake face and the helix angle. Chip flutes and shank strength determine how efficiently chips are removed and forces are absorbed. For deeper drilling depths, internal cooling channels provide direct cooling at the cutting zone and support reliable chip evacuation. Coatings increase hot hardness and reduce friction, thereby improving tool life and ensuring that the cutting edges remain stable for longer.

Selection criteria

The choice of tool within the solid carbide drill family is determined by drilling depth, positioning accuracy, material group, tolerance requirements and machine rigidity. The subcategories serve different purposes:

  • Solid carbide spiral drill

Suitable for a wide range of applications requiring precise drilling. Selection criteria include helix angle, tip geometry and, if necessary, internal cooling – particularly for drilling depths greater than three times the diameter.
  • Solid carbide deep hole drill

Designed for deep drilling. High coolant pressure, stable guidance and controlled chip breaking are essential to ensure reliable chip removal.
  • Solid carbide center drill

For creating precise reference points that improve the alignment of subsequent machining operations. The choice depends on the point angle and the form of the grooving.
  • Solid carbide NC-center drill

For precise positioning in CNC environments. Its short, rigid design minimizes deflection and produces reproducible cut surfaces.
  • Solid carbide three fluted countersinker

For creating defined countersinks. The cutting geometry, opening angle and runout affect dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Other factors that influence the process include tool clamping, machine stability and chip management when machining materials that produce deep or long chips.

What are solid carbide drills used for?

For precise through, blind and counterbore holes, as well as for preparing surfaces for reaming and threading.

What materials can be machined?

Steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and numerous alloys.

When is interior cooling recommended?

For deeper drilling depths or when chip removal is difficult, to stabilize heat dissipation and chip transport.
